An 8-year old child was arrested by Israeli police on Thursday, 13 September, on accusation of throwing stones. Mo’taz Shweki was held for several hours at Salah al-Din police station after he was taken from Bir Ayyub district of Silwan and transferred to Wadi Rababa before he was finally released.
Shweki’s father told Silwanic that: “My son was playing with his friends in Bir Ayyub park when an argument took place between the children there. Mo’taz threw a stone at one of his friends just as an army jeep was passing by. Of course the soldiers then came out, and the kids all tried to run home before the soldiers could reach them. The soldiers followed the kids and tried to break into one of the houses they’d run into – including my son. When the officers gained entry, they accused Mo’taz of throwing stones at them and arrested him.
They allowed one of Mo’taz’s relatives to accompany him in the army jeep to investigation at Salah al-Din police station. There, several investigators refused to interview him because of his age, though our relative present protested that Mo’taz should not be arrested without being interviewed. Eventually one of the investigators agreed to interview him, then released him with no conditions.”
